Government of Pakistan held its One Year Performance Review Meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, where the Ministry of Information Technology & Telecom (MoITT) highlighted significant achievements in the country’s digital landscape. The review showcased the government’s efforts in expanding digital access, fostering innovation, increasing IT exports, and strengthening global partnerships to position Pakistan as a leading player in the global tech industry.

One of the major accomplishments presented at the meeting was the expansion of internet access, which enabled 794,363 new users to connect to the digital world. This milestone aligns with the government’s vision of a digitally inclusive Pakistan, ensuring that more citizens, particularly in remote and underserved areas, can access online resources, e-commerce platforms, and digital financial services. The Ministry also reported a remarkable 27% increase in IT exports over seven months, highlighting the sector’s growing contribution to the national economy. The surge in exports reflects the growing competitiveness of Pakistan’s IT industry, which has been gaining global recognition for its skilled workforce and cost-effective digital solutions.

Additionally, the government has actively supported the startup ecosystem, with 229 new startups incubated over the past year. These emerging businesses collectively generated PKR 1.37 billion in revenue, demonstrating the potential of Pakistan’s tech entrepreneurs to drive innovation and economic growth. By providing access to funding, mentorship, and market opportunities, the government has played a crucial role in fostering a thriving entrepreneurial landscape. Pakistan also made a significant mark on the global stage by securing the top ranking in the ITU Cyber Security Index 2024. This achievement underscores the country’s commitment to enhancing cybersecurity frameworks, ensuring robust digital infrastructure, and aligning with international security standards to protect users from cyber threats.

The Ministry of IT & Telecom also played a vital role in strengthening Pakistan’s global tech presence through strategic collaborations. Over 70 Government-to-Government (G2G) and Business-to-Business (B2B) Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed with various international partners. These agreements are expected to boost foreign investment, create job opportunities, and facilitate knowledge-sharing between Pakistan and leading global tech companies. Further solidifying Pakistan’s reputation in the global tech ecosystem, the country’s IT sector was showcased at major international technology events, including GITEX, LEAP, and industry conferences in London, Dublin, and Toronto. These exhibitions provided Pakistani tech firms with opportunities to network with international investors, explore new markets, and exhibit their innovations on a global platform.

The Ministry’s achievements over the past year reflect the government’s broader vision of making Pakistan a “Tech Destination,” where digital services, e-governance, and innovation drive economic growth and social development. By investing in digital transformation, promoting entrepreneurship, and securing international partnerships, the country is positioning itself as a key player in the global technology sector. With continued focus on policy reforms, infrastructure development, and digital inclusion, the government aims to sustain this momentum and further accelerate Pakistan’s journey toward a tech-driven economy.
