Great Wall Motor, in collaboration with Sazgar Engineering Works Limited, has officially commenced the completely knocked down assembly of the Tank 500 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle in Pakistan, making Pakistan the first country outside China to locally produce the automaker’s flagship sport utility vehicle. Announced at an exclusive ceremony attended by senior government officials and Chinese diplomatic representatives, the development highlights Pakistan’s growing importance in the global automotive and new-energy vehicle ecosystem, with GWM’s Country Manager Walker noting that the CKD rollout reflects the company’s confidence in Pakistan’s market potential.
Assembled by Sazgar Engineering under the CKD regime, the Tank 500 is available in two variants: the Hybrid Electric Vehicle priced at Rs20,500,000 and the Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle at Rs22,500,000 ex-factory, a significant reduction from the previously imported version which was priced at Rs45,000,000. The PHEV variant is particularly noteworthy from a technical standpoint. It features a larger 37.11 kilowatt-hour battery pack granting up to 102 kilometres of pure electric range under WLTP testing conditions, with combined system power reaching 402 horsepower and 750 Newton metres of torque. Charging options include alternating current home charging in up to 6.5 hours and direct current fast charging completing in approximately 24 minutes for partial replenishment. The vehicle is built on a body-on-frame chassis and measures 5,078 millimetres in length with a wheelbase of 2,850 millimetres, giving it the proportions and ground clearance required for both urban and off-road use.
According to discussions during the reveal, current production is hovering around 60 to 70 units per day, with plans to scale up to 120 units per day on a new assembly line, which could mean around 1,700 vehicles per month across variants once everything ramps up. Mian Asad Hameed, Chief Executive Officer of Sazgar Engineering Works Limited, emphasised the importance of localisation and technology transfer in advancing Pakistan’s automotive industry, while Chief Operating Officer Mian Ali Hameed said the company is proud to contribute to Pakistan’s economic growth through the collaboration. Over the past five years, GWM has steadily expanded its presence in Pakistan through its partnership with Sazgar Engineering Works Limited, having gained consumer trust through models like the HAVAL H6.
The local assembly of the Tank 500 PHEV positions Pakistan as a meaningful participant in the global shift toward new-energy vehicles at a time when the government is actively encouraging investment in the electric and hybrid vehicle space. At its pricing, the locally assembled Tank 500 undercuts several imported luxury competitors while delivering comparable or superior hybrid efficiency and off-road capability, with local assembly also expected to reduce long-term ownership costs through better parts availability and warranty support. For Great Wall Motor, whose Tank sub-brand has established a strong global identity as a premium off-road focused nameplate, Pakistan now becomes a strategic manufacturing base that could serve as a reference point for other markets in the region looking at similar CKD arrangements.
