Microsoft Lets Windows 11 Users Pause Forced Updates Indefinitely With New 35-Day Renewable Pause Feature

Microsoft has announced a significant change to how Windows Update works on Windows 11, introducing the ability for users to pause system updates indefinitely by renewing a 35-day pause window as many times as they choose. The update, announced on Microsoft’s official Windows Insider blog by Aria Hanson, addresses one of the most persistent frustrations reported by Windows users: being interrupted by a forced update at an inconvenient moment, whether mid-meeting, mid-game, or mid-task, with no reliable way to defer it beyond a limited window.

Under the new system, users can opt to pause updates for Windows 11, which suspends all incoming updates for a period of 35 days. Once that window approaches its end, users can now simply reset the 35-day counter and continue deferring for another full cycle, with no cap on how many times this can be repeated. Microsoft confirmed that this change was a direct response to user feedback that consistently highlighted the disruption caused by untimely updates and a lack of meaningful control over when those updates occur. The company has been clear, however, that users should eventually install the updates they defer, as the majority of Windows updates carry security patches and vulnerability fixes that protect devices from emerging threats, and indefinite deferral carries its own risks if practised without awareness of what is being postponed.

Beyond the pause extension, Microsoft is also ensuring that Windows 11 users always have the option to shut down or restart their devices without being forced through an update cycle in the process, removing the scenario where a user attempts a quick shutdown and instead finds themselves waiting through an unwanted update installation. These changes build on a previous quality-of-life improvement that allowed users to skip updates entirely during the initial setup of a new Windows device. The updated Windows Update features are currently rolling out to participants in the Windows Insider programme, specifically those enrolled in the Dev and Experimental Channels, meaning a broader release to the general Windows 11 user base is expected to follow once the features have been validated through the Insider testing process.
