HMD Global, the Finnish company behind Nokia phones, announced plans to bring modern smartphone-style features to its feature phones during MWC 2026. The company aims to broaden digital access for users who are under-connected, introducing services such as a digital wallet, an AI assistant, and video calling throughout 2026. These initiatives are designed to provide secure and accessible digital tools to a wider audience, particularly in regions where smartphone adoption remains limited. HMD Global’s move reflects the growing trend of bringing smart technology capabilities to simpler devices, allowing users to engage with digital services without upgrading to full smartphones.

The digital wallet feature will enable users to receive, store, and withdraw funds using local payment systems. It is expected to launch first in India during the first half of 2026, with plans for broader regional expansion later. The wallet has been developed in collaboration with fintech firm Kivi3 and blockchain company Polygon Labs, and it includes device-level security with PIN protection to safeguard user transactions. By embedding financial services directly into feature phones, HMD Global is enabling digital inclusion for millions of users who may not have access to traditional banking systems or smartphones, helping them participate in cashless and digital payment ecosystems.

HMD Global is also integrating AI capabilities into upcoming feature phones. Partnering with Sarvam AI, the company will introduce a voice-based assistant capable of handling basic tasks such as making calls, setting alarms, and controlling the torch with voice commands. The assistant will also provide a simple AI chat experience for answering common queries. A pilot program has been designed specifically for elderly users in collaboration with InTouch, offering a voice-enabled companion that provides personalized support and companionship. Initial trials are expected in Europe, with plans for global expansion following successful testing.

In addition, HMD Global is introducing video calling and enhanced messaging through its new Xpress Chat application. The app will support front-facing camera video conferencing, voice messaging, group chats, and photo sharing, making feature phones capable of handling essential communication functions that were previously limited to smartphones. By combining AI-driven assistance, secure digital payments, and multimedia communication, HMD Global is redefining the capabilities of feature phones and demonstrating that smart features can reach a broader audience without requiring high-end devices.
