HMD has launched the HMD 105 4G School Edition, a feature phone designed for students who need basic communication without the distractions commonly associated with smartphones. The device allows users to make calls and send text messages while leaving out several entertainment and internet related functions. HMD has specifically removed the web browser, voice recording feature, and the traditional Snake game from this edition. The phone also includes a PIN protected parental control system that allows parents and guardians to manage selected features, giving them greater control over how the handset can be used.
The School Edition is based on the standard HMD 105 4G and retains much of the same hardware while making software changes for its intended student focused use. It comes with a 2.4 inch display offering a resolution of 240 × 320 pixels, along with 64 megabytes of random access memory and 128 megabytes of internal storage. Storage can be expanded by up to 32 gigabytes through a microSD card. The phone supports 2G, 3G, and 4G networks, while Bluetooth 5.0 is also available. Parents can disable Bluetooth through the parental control system when required. The handset includes a USB Type C charging port and a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack, while its contact storage can accommodate up to 2,000 entries.
HMD has also included controls that allow parents to disable additional communication and entertainment functions. Bluetooth, Multimedia Messaging Service, and the FM radio can be restricted through the PIN protected controls. This approach separates the School Edition from conventional feature phones, which typically retain games, radio, recording tools, and other functions alongside basic calling and messaging. At the same time, the device continues to provide 4G connectivity, allowing students to remain reachable by family members and other contacts without providing the broader range of internet based services found on smartphones. The company has retained the removable 1,450mAh battery as another practical feature, with HMD claiming up to 15 days of standby time on a single charge.
HMD has not yet announced the official price of the HMD 105 4G School Edition or provided a complete list of markets where the device will be available. The phone is positioned as an option for parents who want to provide children with basic mobile communication while limiting access to features that can become distractions during school or study time. Its hardware remains close to the regular HMD 105 4G, but the removal of the browser, recording function, and Snake game, combined with configurable parental controls, gives the School Edition a more restricted setup. With 4G support, a removable battery, USB Type C charging, wired headphone support, and extended standby time, the device focuses on essential mobile communication rather than smartphone style features.
