After more than a decade centered on its Hero line, GoPro has introduced its first camera built around interchangeable lenses. Priced at 699 dollars, the Mission 1 Pro ILS accepts Micro Four Thirds lenses, opening the door to hundreds of compatible options spanning a wide range of prices. The move initially drew skepticism given the absence of autofocus, a lack of waterproofing and a substantial 2.7x crop factor, with early critics suggesting the camera might not fully satisfy either GoPro’s traditional audience or dedicated filmmakers.
Much of the Mission 1 Pro ILS shares its foundation with the standard Mission 1 Pro, including 8K video at 60 frames per second, a 1 inch sensor, full open gate recording for flexible 4K output, and the same high speed burst mode capable of 960 frames per second for ten seconds. The key difference lies in the front of the camera, where a lens mount replaces the fixed optics, accepting more than 300 compatible Micro Four Thirds lenses. This shift hands users direct control over focus, aperture and exposure, responsibilities most GoPro users rarely need to think about, marking a significant change in how the camera is operated day to day.
Setup requires manually specifying the lens type and focal length each time a new lens is attached, and skipping this step can interfere with stabilization features. Because autofocus is unavailable, GoPro has built in tools such as Focus Peaking, which highlights sharp edges with a colored outline, along with digital zoom options to help verify focus manually. These tools work reasonably well but are not foolproof, particularly with lenses offering shallow depth of field, where subjects can more easily fall outside the sharp focus zone. Companion apps, including GoPro’s Quik app and a dedicated Mission Monitor tool, extend the camera’s preview and monitoring capabilities to a connected phone, adding options like exposure warnings for overexposed areas.
Image quality marks a clear step up from the standard Mission 1 Pro, with results varying depending on the specific lens attached. Wider aperture lenses in particular produced notably shallow depth of field more commonly associated with dedicated mirrorless cameras. The camera also proved unexpectedly capable for photography, with its 50 megapixel sensor, compact rugged body and access to a large lens ecosystem making it a genuinely flexible option beyond video work. Battery life, however, takes a hit compared to the standard Mission 1 Pro, particularly at higher bitrates and extended focus checking, though it still delivers a solid two hours of continuous use in warmer conditions. Overall, the ILS is best suited to users who value portability and cinematic image quality enough to accept a genuine manual focus learning curve, rather than casual vloggers or traditional action camera users seeking point and shoot simplicity.
