GrapheneOS is set to expand beyond Google Pixel smartphones, with official support coming to selected Motorola devices starting in 2027. The privacy and security focused Android operating system will initially target Motorola flagship smartphones before support is extended to additional devices, including the company Razr foldable lineup. The development follows a long term partnership between Motorola and GrapheneOS Foundation announced earlier this year, under which both sides agreed to work on future hardware designed to meet the operating system security requirements.
GrapheneOS is currently officially supported on Google Pixel smartphones and is based on the Android Open Source Project. The operating system focuses heavily on privacy and security, offering features designed to reduce the exposure of user data and improve application isolation. According to recent information from the GrapheneOS project, the first Motorola devices with official support are expected to become available in 2027 and will begin with higher end flagship models. The initial devices are expected to use hardware that meets the project requirements for security features, including hardware based memory tagging and secure element capabilities.
The Motorola partnership is also expected to eventually bring GrapheneOS to the company foldable smartphones. Following the initial flagship release, support is planned for devices such as the Razr Fold and Razr Ultra. The Razr Ultra would represent a notable addition to the GrapheneOS supported hardware lineup because it would bring the operating system to a flip style smartphone form factor. Current Motorola devices do not fully meet all of GrapheneOS hardware requirements, but upcoming generations of Qualcomm Snapdragon processors are expected to provide capabilities needed for official compatibility. Motorola is also contributing to the hardware and software integration required for the project.
The upcoming Motorola devices are expected to sit at the higher end of the smartphone market, with GrapheneOS indicating that the initial hardware will offer specifications above comparable Google Pixel models and could carry higher prices. The project has also highlighted the importance of long term software support, particularly if GrapheneOS is to expand beyond flagship devices in the future. The partnership gives Motorola an opportunity to offer smartphones designed around a privacy focused operating system while giving GrapheneOS access to hardware beyond the Pixel ecosystem.
