Google is introducing a major upgrade to its Gemini AI assistant, called Personal Intelligence, designed to provide more personalized and context-aware responses for users. The update, currently experimental and opt-in, is being described by Google as a significant step toward AI that better understands individual preferences and life contexts. It is rolling out in the US first, with plans to expand to other countries in the future.

Personal Intelligence is aimed at addressing one of the long-standing limitations of AI assistants, which is the lack of contextual understanding of a user’s habits and preferences. While AI often appears impressive during presentations or demos, day-to-day interactions can feel generic. With this upgrade, Gemini is expected to deliver tailored recommendations and perform tasks that take into account user-specific information. For example, users seeking suggestions for San Francisco could receive curated ideas such as attending a 49ers game or visiting craft beer bars near their hotel. Similarly, shopping for winter car tyres could be simplified as Gemini would reference Gmail documents to identify the correct vehicle model.

The update will initially be available to subscribers of Google AI Pro or AI Ultra, costing $19.99 per month in the US, though Google has indicated that it will later be introduced to the free tier within the AI Mode tool in search. Users must actively opt in, as Personal Intelligence will be off by default. Once enabled, it will integrate across Android, iOS, and web platforms, utilizing data from Gmail, Google Photos, Search, and YouTube History to provide relevant and personalized responses. Google emphasizes that the system is limited to personal accounts, ensuring that data used to enhance recommendations remains private and specific to each user.

Google has framed the upgrade as a move to allow AI to connect the dots between user data and real-world tasks, making interactions more meaningful. Early adopters are expected to experience enhanced functionality across Gemini models, with improved contextual relevance for both casual queries and more complex tasks. Additionally, Gemini’s influence is set to extend beyond Android devices, with reports suggesting it will play a role in the upcoming Siri AI upgrade. While availability outside the US has not been confirmed, the rollout of Personal Intelligence represents a step toward AI that learns from and adapts to individual users, providing a more integrated and helpful digital assistant experience.
