Google Expands Digital Skills In Pakistan

Google has expanded its digital skills initiative in Pakistan to provide a total of 350,000 Google Career Certificates nationwide, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to prepare more people for an increasingly AI driven economy. The milestone follows the addition of 150,000 new scholarships earlier this year and reflects the growing scale of the company’s involvement in local workforce development.

The expansion places accessibility at the centre of the initiative, with learners across Pakistan able to develop practical skills through online, globally recognized courses in areas such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, cybersecurity, project management, digital marketing and e-commerce. The nationwide reach of the program is designed to reduce barriers created by geographical location, limited training opportunities, and the high cost of conventional professional education, making digital skills training more accessible to people across different regions and income levels.

Since 2022, Google has steadily increased its investment in digital learning in Pakistan, and this latest milestone shifts the program from a series of individual learning opportunities into a broader workforce development effort. Rather than focusing only on certification, the initiative is designed to help participants apply their new capabilities to employment, freelancing, entrepreneurship and community development, giving the program a more practical orientation aimed at translating training into real economic outcomes. The rollout is being supported by local partners, including TechValley, the Punjab Higher Education Commission and the Higher Education Department, among others, with government participation adding to the program’s national relevance.

The Ministry of IT and Telecommunication has mandated that every ministry official complete two Google Career Certificate courses, extending the digital skills drive into the public sector and supporting the use of AI and digital tools in government work. The move signals a broader effort to integrate digital literacy directly into public sector operations, aligning the government’s own technical capacity with the wider push to prepare Pakistan’s workforce for an economy increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and digital tools.
