Karachi to Install Smart Parking Cameras

The Sindh Safe Cities Authority has announced plans to install smart no parking cameras across Karachi to automatically detect illegally parked vehicles and enable the issuance of electronic traffic challans. According to the authority, the cameras will be placed at no parking zones throughout the city and will identify vehicles parked in violation of traffic rules, with the information transmitted directly to the Traffic Regulation and Citation System used by Karachi Traffic Police.

Director General Sarfaraz Nawaz said vehicle owners found violating no parking regulations will receive electronic challans through the system without requiring any physical interaction with traffic officers. He said the initiative forms part of the Karachi Safe City Project, under which the Sindh Safe Cities Authority has already established a citywide surveillance network comprising more than 1,300 AI based cameras installed at various locations across the city.

The authority said the new smart no parking cameras will further expand this existing surveillance network and enable Karachi Traffic Police to issue real time, faceless e-challans against vehicles parked in prohibited areas. The move builds on the city’s broader push toward automated traffic enforcement, following earlier efforts to reduce manual intervention in the citation process and improve compliance with parking regulations across busy urban areas.

The initiative comes shortly after Karachi Traffic Police issued a separate warning about scammers circulating fake e-challan text messages impersonating the department’s official helpline, underscoring the growing role of digital systems in the city’s traffic enforcement framework and the corresponding need for public awareness around verifying official communications. As the smart camera network expands, authorities are expected to rely increasingly on automated detection methods to enforce parking rules across Karachi’s congested roads.
