The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has detected over 250,000 fake Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) across Pakistan through a newly implemented software system designed to identify fraudulent records. According to reports, a significant portion of these fake CNICs were issued to Afghan nationals who managed to acquire them through intermediaries posing as agents. These agents allegedly inserted foreign nationals into the family trees of Pakistani citizens before facilitating the issuance of official CNICs. The use of specialized verification software allowed NADRA to uncover this large-scale manipulation within its database, strengthening efforts to safeguard the integrity of the national identity system.
Authorities have started blocking the identified fake CNICs, and individuals affected by the verification process have been instructed to visit NADRA offices for further review. NADRA officials explained that those whose cards were blocked must submit documentation verifying their family relationships to confirm their legitimacy. Once validated, genuine CNICs will be restored and reactivated. This step forms part of NADRA’s broader effort to ensure transparency and maintain the accuracy of the national citizen registry. The agency is also increasing internal oversight and tightening data verification protocols to prevent similar fraudulent activities in the future.
In parallel with the crackdown on fake CNICs, NADRA has introduced a new digital service that simplifies the process of obtaining or renewing identity cards. Through the Pak ID website and mobile application, citizens can now apply for CNICs online without visiting physical centers. Once processed, the CNICs are delivered directly to the applicant’s home via courier. This new online facility aims to save time, enhance accessibility, and reduce crowding at NADRA offices. The system also provides real-time updates, ensuring applicants are informed about the status of their requests from submission to delivery.
Additionally, the Government of Pakistan has introduced a new policy allowing citizens to obtain their first CNIC free of cost within 15 days. NADRA confirmed this update through its official Facebook page, announcing that individuals aged 18 and above can now visit any NADRA center to apply for their first CNIC without paying a fee. The initiative is aimed at encouraging timely registration, ensuring every eligible citizen is documented in the national database. Alongside these improvements, NADRA has revised its CNIC renewal fees, setting new rates at Rs 400 for normal renewals, Rs 1,150 for urgent requests, and Rs 2,150 for executive processing.
