WhatsApp is preparing to introduce a major customisation update for its web platform, bringing chat themes to desktop users for the first time. The feature, which has long been available on mobile devices, will soon allow users to personalise their conversations directly from the browser-based version of the application. The update is expected to significantly enhance user experience by offering a more flexible and visually tailored messaging interface.
Chat themes are designed to let users modify the appearance of their conversations by changing message bubble colours and background wallpapers. In addition to visual appeal, the feature also supports accessibility by allowing users to select themes that are easier on the eyes, depending on lighting conditions or personal preference. Until now, WhatsApp Web has offered limited customisation options, mainly restricted to wallpapers and basic background settings, without deeper control over conversation aesthetics.
The upcoming update will introduce a broader settings panel within WhatsApp Web, enabling users to select a default theme that applies across chats or customize individual conversations separately. This means users will be able to assign different visual styles to specific chats, helping them distinguish between work related conversations, personal messages, and group discussions. The feature is designed to improve usability by making chat organisation more intuitive through visual differentiation.
According to available details, WhatsApp is working on a total of 49 chat theme variations, including the default option. These themes will offer subtle differences in colour tones and intensity, providing users with a wide range of personalisation choices. For example, multiple variations of blue themed interfaces will be available, such as Default Blue, Sky Blue, and Royal Blue, each with tonal and minimal variations to suit different preferences. Importantly, these customisations will remain private, meaning only the user applying the theme will see the changes, while other participants in the conversation will continue to view the standard interface.
The feature is currently in development and is expected to undergo testing through beta releases before a wider rollout. Once launched, it will bring WhatsApp Web closer in functionality to its mobile counterpart, addressing long standing user demand for enhanced personalisation on desktop. The development reflects a broader trend among messaging platforms to improve user engagement through interface customisation while maintaining simplicity and consistency across devices.
