The Punjab government has announced that its electric bike scheme, currently in the process of distributing 100,000 units to students, will be extended to government employees once the student phase is completed, as Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz chaired a meeting to review progress on the province’s broader green transport agenda.
Under the scheme, the government will initially distribute 100,000 e-bikes to students through an interest-free installment plan, after which government employees will also become eligible to obtain e-bikes under the same programme. The Punjab government will provide a subsidy of Rs70,000 for each electric bike, with beneficiaries able to purchase the vehicles through an interest-free installment plan estimated at Rs2,100 per month. Female students receive an additional concession, with the Punjab government covering both the down payment and registration fee, meaning women students pay only the monthly installment of Rs2,100, while male students are required to pay a Rs14,000 down payment before the remaining cost is split across monthly payments.
The electric bike announcement is part of a wider green transport initiative that Punjab has been advancing alongside its expanding electric bus fleet, e-taxi programme, and electric three-wheeler rollout across the province. The Bank of Punjab is financing the installment plans, with the government covering the interest component to ensure the scheme remains genuinely zero-cost to beneficiaries beyond the agreed monthly principal payments. The extension to government employees follows the federal government’s earlier approval in April of a similar scheme for employees up to BPS-16, aligning provincial and federal policy on subsidised electric mobility for public sector workers and accelerating Pakistan’s broader target of transitioning 30 percent of vehicles to electric power within five years as part of the National Electric Vehicle Policy.
