The Punjab government has announced a major expansion of its electric bike initiative, under which 100,000 e-bikes will be distributed to students across the province over the next year. The decision was approved during a meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz as part of the province’s broader strategy to promote affordable, environmentally friendly transportation and improve mobility for students.

To make electric bikes more affordable, the provincial government will provide a subsidy of Rs70,000 on each vehicle. Male students will be required to pay a down payment of Rs14,000, followed by interest-free monthly installments of Rs2,100. Female students will receive additional financial support, with the government covering both the down payment and registration fee. They will only be responsible for paying the monthly installment, significantly reducing the upfront cost of ownership.

The government has also decided to extend the facility beyond students by allowing government employees to purchase electric bikes through similar easy installment plans. Officials believe the expanded scheme will encourage wider adoption of electric mobility while helping reduce fuel expenses and transportation costs for commuters. Authorities have also been directed to explore even more flexible financing options to maximize participation in the programme.

The announcement forms part of Punjab’s wider green transportation agenda, which includes the rollout of electric buses, e-taxis and other clean mobility initiatives across the province. During the meeting, officials informed the chief minister that electric buses are now being assembled locally, marking an important milestone in developing Pakistan’s domestic electric vehicle manufacturing ecosystem. The provincial government plans to deploy electric buses across dozens of districts and tehsils while simultaneously expanding charging infrastructure to support the growing number of EVs on the road.

By significantly scaling up its student e-bike programme, Punjab aims to make daily commuting more affordable, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and accelerate the adoption of sustainable transportation. The initiative also supports the province’s long-term environmental goals by encouraging cleaner mobility solutions while improving access to education through reliable and low-cost transportation. If implemented successfully, the programme could become one of Pakistan’s largest electric mobility initiatives, benefiting thousands of students and contributing to the country’s transition toward greener transportation.
