The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has made Google artificial intelligence training mandatory for all of its employees, marking one of the more concrete steps taken by a Pakistani federal institution to formally integrate artificial intelligence skills into its public sector workforce. Under the initiative, Google will provide free artificial intelligence training to employees across all departments of the ministry, equipping officials with practical knowledge of artificial intelligence technologies and helping them incorporate emerging digital tools into their administrative, operational, and policy-related work. The decision was finalised following a direct meeting between a Google delegation and Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja, during which both sides agreed to collaborate on promoting artificial intelligence education and digital skills development, with a particular focus on strengthening human capital within Pakistan’s technology ecosystem.

According to ministry officials, the programme is centred on capacity building and familiarising employees with modern artificial intelligence applications that are increasingly transforming workplaces across both the public and private sectors globally. The training is expected to improve institutional efficiency, enhance productivity, and promote a more technology-driven culture within government, addressing a gap that has long been identified as a barrier to meaningful digital transformation in Pakistan’s public administration. By making the training mandatory rather than optional, the ministry is signalling a shift in approach, moving from awareness-level initiatives to structured, enforceable skill-building requirements that apply uniformly across departmental lines.

The initiative sits within a broader and accelerating national agenda around artificial intelligence workforce development. Earlier this month, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication announced plans to launch 20,000 online artificial intelligence training programmes under the National Artificial Intelligence Advancement Initiative, targeting fresh graduates, government officials, professionals, teachers, and freelancers across the country over the coming years. The mandatory Google training for ministry staff complements that wider effort by ensuring that the ministry leading Pakistan’s digital transformation agenda is itself building the internal capability to understand, evaluate, and deploy the artificial intelligence tools it is promoting across the broader economy. As artificial intelligence becomes an increasingly important driver of productivity, innovation, and economic growth worldwide, the ministry’s move to mandate this training reflects a recognition that workforce readiness within government is as critical as policy frameworks in determining how successfully Pakistan navigates the next wave of technological change.
