Pakistan successfully launched its second communication satellite, PAKSAT MM1, on Thursday. This significant development aims to bolster the country’s internet and communication infrastructure.
The multi-mission communication satellite was launched from China’s Xichang Satellite Launch Centre, following an announcement by the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) last week. This launch builds upon Pakistan’s historic achievement earlier this month when the country sent its first satellite into space as part of China’s Chang’e-6 lunar mission.
According to Pakistan Television, the state-run broadcaster, the new satellite is expected to significantly improve internet access nationwide, alongside enhancing television broadcasts, cellular phone services, and broadband capabilities. The satellite is anticipated to be operational by August.
Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, present at the launch, expressed optimism for Pakistan’s future space endeavors. He envisioned a future where the nation launches its own satellites from a domestic space launch center.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also lauded the achievement, highlighting the potential for PAKSAT MM1 to deliver “the fastest internet facility” across Pakistan. “This satellite, with its advanced communication technology, promises to revolutionize our digital landscape,” he stated.
The Prime Minister emphasized the launch as a major advancement in Pakistan’s space and communication capabilities. He highlighted the positive impact on citizens’ lives, including improved access to e-commerce, e-governance, and economic activities.
PM Shehbaz further commended the strong collaboration between Pakistan and China, calling it a “testament to the strong partnership between the two countries.” He underlined the importance of such collaborations in driving technological progress for the benefit of the people.
The geostationary orbit positioning of PAKSAT MM1, 36,000 kilometers above Earth, was also acknowledged by the Prime Minister as a testament to Pakistan’s growing scientific and technological prowess. He expressed gratitude to Suparco and all those involved in the mission’s success.
Looking ahead, the Prime Minister emphasized the launch as a symbol of Pakistan’s potential and a promising future in space and communication technology. He concluded with a message of hope, expressing that PAKSAT MM1 may be “the harbinger of even greater successes.”
