The Education Department of Punjab has made online registration of attendance mandatory for both students and teachers in government schools across the province, in a move aimed at improving transparency and accountability in the public education system. Under the new directive, students and teachers who do not register their attendance through the digital system will be considered absent, and strict action will be taken against schools that fail to update their data on the School Education System in a timely manner. The Punjab Education Department has issued orders to all Chief Executive Officers to ensure one hundred percent data update compliance across their respective districts.

The Education Secretary expressed concern over the non-timely uploading of student admissions and attendance records, emphasizing that complete attendance data for both students and teachers must be uploaded on the system. Authorities have set April 20 as the deadline for updating all required data, and action will be taken against those who provide incorrect or incomplete information under the Punjab Employees Efficiency Discipline and Accountability Act. The imposition of consequences under the Punjab Employees Efficiency Discipline and Accountability Act signals that the directive is being treated as a serious administrative requirement rather than a voluntary or advisory measure, raising the stakes for school administrators and teaching staff who have historically operated with limited digital oversight.

Monitoring teams will conduct visits to schools, and head teachers will be held responsible for any discrepancies found during inspections. The move is part of efforts to improve transparency and record-keeping in the public school system. Placing accountability directly on head teachers for discrepancies found during monitoring visits is a significant shift in how compliance will be enforced, as it creates a clear chain of responsibility at the school level rather than relying solely on district-level oversight. The combination of a firm deadline, digital verification through the School Education System, surprise monitoring visits, and the threat of formal disciplinary proceedings under the Punjab Employees Efficiency Discipline and Accountability Act reflects an attempt to close longstanding loopholes in how attendance and admission data has been managed in Punjab’s government schools, a system that has historically been vulnerable to ghost enrolments and inflated teacher attendance figures.
