Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to launch Vision Pakistan 2047 on August 12, presenting a long term roadmap centered on youth development, technological advancement and sustainable economic growth. The plan will be unveiled to mark International Youth Day and is being positioned as a twenty year national development blueprint that brings federal ministries and their attached institutions under a common framework extending through the year 2047, as the country moves toward longer term planning of its economic, technological and social priorities.
A major focus of the proposed roadmap centers on Pakistan’s youth population, with the government seeking to convert the country’s large number of young people into a driving force for economic growth, innovation, employment and technological transformation. The vision is expected to outline strategies for building human capital and creating opportunities that allow young Pakistanis to play a central role in the country’s economic future. Preparations for the launch have accelerated in recent weeks, with the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme, headed by Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan, directing federal ministries and their attached divisions to submit recommendations on an urgent basis. Ministries have been instructed to gather and consolidate proposals from their departments, autonomous organisations and subordinate offices before submitting comprehensive plans outlining long term objectives, major reforms and development priorities through 2047.
The proposed national vision is expected to span a wide range of priority areas, including economic transformation, youth empowerment and human capital development, technological advancement and innovation, environmental sustainability, governance and institutional reforms, and sector specific development initiatives. Officials have said the government is seeking proposals capable of delivering meaningful, measurable outcomes rather than descriptions of routine administrative functions, with each ministry asked to align its plans with a shared, forward looking national direction. The exercise is intended to produce a unified development roadmap that brings federal ministries around common objectives, giving the country clearer strategic direction over the next two decades.
In broad terms, Vision Pakistan 2047 is being framed as a long range plan to define what the country should look like by its hundredth year of independence. It builds on the government’s existing URAAN Pakistan strategy rather than starting from a blank slate, and places particular emphasis on expanding information technology, artificial intelligence, freelancing, startups, digital services, connectivity and cybersecurity as part of efforts to turn the youth population into an economic advantage through skills, jobs, entrepreneurship and education. Rather than depending largely on domestic consumption, the strategy aims to increase production of goods and services for international markets, with the broader URAAN framework targeting annual exports of around 60 billion dollars.
The long term ambition outlined under the strategy points toward an economy of roughly one trillion dollars by 2035, with the possibility of reaching three trillion dollars by 2047. Improvements to electricity supply, transport networks and other infrastructure are considered necessary to support this level of industrial and economic expansion, alongside continued attention to climate resilience, water security and food security. The plan’s Equity, Ethics and Empowerment pillar is expected to address women’s participation in the economy, healthcare, education and broader social justice concerns, rounding out a framework that officials describe as intended to guide the country’s development priorities over the coming two decades. Further details of the roadmap are expected to become available once it is formally unveiled on August 12.
