Mojang has confirmed that Minecraft will finally let players sit down through a new craftable item called the Cushion, ending nearly 17 years of players relying on makeshift workarounds to achieve the effect. The announcement came through a developer blog video titled Sit Down, New Features Incoming, which previewed the studio’s next major game drop alongside several other additions to the long running sandbox title.

Players have been requesting a proper way to sit since the game’s earliest alpha build appeared online in May 2009. Over the years, the community relied on custom mods, or resorted to physical workarounds such as hiding minecarts and boats inside small seat shaped structures, and in some cases even trapping mountable animals in place to simulate the appearance of sitting. Mojang has now resolved the long standing request with a simple, purpose built solution that removes the need for any of these tricks. The new Cushion is crafted using three Wool Slabs placed in a horizontal line, with Wool Slabs themselves arriving as a new block type in the same update. Once crafted, players can place the Cushion on any flat surface and interact with it to make their character sit down, with Mojang confirming the item will be available in 16 different colours to give builders a wide range of customisation options for their in game spaces.

Beyond the sitting mechanic, the upcoming game drop introduces a new biome called the Dappled Forest, along with a new Abandoned Camp point of interest that will generate naturally within the biome as well as in some of the game’s existing environments. The update also adds several new building materials, including a Poplar Wood block set, Shelf Mushrooms, and Wool Stairs, expanding the range of decorative and structural options available to players working on builds across both survival and creative modes. Another notable addition is the Straw Bed, a new type of bed crafted from three Hay Bales placed horizontally, which allows players to skip through the night without resetting their permanent spawn point. Unlike a standard bed, the Straw Bed is designed for single use and breaks completely once used, giving players a temporary but useful tool for managing nighttime survival without altering long term game progress.

Mojang has stated that the full game drop is officially set to launch in the third quarter of 2026, though players eager to try the new features early do not need to wait for the final release. The sitting mechanic and other additions are already accessible through the Java Snapshot, Bedrock Beta, and Preview versions of Minecraft, allowing the wider community to begin testing and providing feedback ahead of the official rollout. The introduction of the Cushion is being widely viewed within the Minecraft community as one of the most requested quality of life improvements finally being addressed, particularly benefiting builders and roleplay focused players who have long sought a straightforward, official way to add functional seating to their in-game creations without relying on external modifications.
