Officials said the thermal drones will help identify smoke and pollution sources directly, allowing authorities to pinpoint the exact location of emissions rather than relying solely on ground level inspections or citizen complaints. As soon as a pollution source is detected through the drone footage, field teams are dispatched to the site immediately to take enforcement action, a workflow designed to compress the gap between detection and response that has historically slowed down pollution crackdowns in the province.
The thermal drone deployment fits into a broader technology stack Punjab has been building around its air quality enforcement efforts, following earlier initiatives that introduced AI based central monitoring of thousands of industrial units alongside a digital air quality forecasting system launched under the province’s Clean and Green Punjab programme. Officials have previously described similar drone based monitoring as part of a “Hawk Eye” system used for patrolling and surveillance across districts, working alongside ground based anti-smog squads and a centralized Smog War Room connected to the Punjab IT Board’s dashboard. The continued expansion of drone coverage suggests the province is treating aerial and thermal detection as a core layer of its enforcement infrastructure rather than a one off pilot technology.
During the last 24 hours alone, 243 industrial units were inspected across Punjab, including 28 specifically in Lahore, reflecting the scale of daily enforcement activity the province is now running as part of its pollution control push. In addition, 366 brick kilns were closely monitored across the province, with officials confirming that action against violators is continuing on an ongoing basis rather than being limited to periodic crackdowns. Officials also checked suction hoods at 233 restaurants and food outlets during the same period, extending enforcement attention beyond industrial and kiln sources to include smaller scale commercial emitters that collectively contribute to urban air quality problems, particularly in dense city centres like Lahore.
The scale of daily inspections, spanning industrial units, brick kilns, and food outlets, points to a sustained enforcement posture rather than a short term response to a particular smog spike, suggesting Punjab intends to keep this level of monitoring activity running through the broader pollution season.
