Qualcomm will introduce its next generation Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro chips at its annual Snapdragon Summit on September 22, and ahead of the event, the company has shared details about a major upgrade to the Hexagon NPU in one of the new processors. The upgraded NPU is designed for agentic AI, which requires devices to handle longer tasks and coordinate multiple AI tools simultaneously, with Qualcomm saying the chip uses a transformer focused Element Accelerator alongside 50 percent more shared memory compared to previous generations. This expanded memory pool is intended to keep frequently used model data closer to the NPU, reducing memory bottlenecks as AI agents handle longer context windows, more tools, and several tasks running at once.
Qualcomm said the Element Accelerator was specifically built for transformer workloads used by modern generative and agentic AI systems, working alongside scalar, vector, and matrix extensions to speed up key operations within large AI models running directly on the device. As a result, the company expects AI agents running on the new chip to respond faster and handle reasoning tasks more efficiently, with Qualcomm also claiming the design can deliver richer AI features without hurting mobile power efficiency, a persistent trade off that chip makers have had to manage as on-device AI capabilities have expanded in recent years. The new Hexagon NPU additionally offers up to 50 percent faster prefill for INT4 quantized models, a detail that speaks to Qualcomm’s focus on optimizing for the kind of compressed, efficient model formats increasingly used to run AI on mobile hardware without excessive battery drain.
The chip is also designed to work well with Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) models, an architecture that activates only part of a model’s total parameters for each token processed, a technique that has become increasingly common in large language model design as a way to balance capability against computational cost. Qualcomm said the NPU is built to support always running AI, long context reasoning, multimodal models, and concurrent agents operating simultaneously on the same device, while also targeting low latency action loops where AI systems need to respond quickly to user requests rather than processing them with noticeable delay. This combination of features positions the chip specifically around the emerging category of agentic AI applications, where a single device may need to juggle several ongoing AI driven tasks rather than handling one request at a time.
Qualcomm has not yet confirmed which specific Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 variant will receive these particular NPU upgrades, leaving open the question of whether the enhancements will be exclusive to the Pro variant or shared across both new chips.
