Adrian Chmielarz, director of Witchfire and founder of The Astronauts, has said that he disliked NVIDIA DLSS 5 at first but now considers it amazing, and he expects it to be accepted in the same way as DLSS 3. He shared his view in an exclusive interview that was conducted around the upcoming 1.0 launch of Witchfire. According to him, his opinion changed after he saw better tuned examples of the technology. His comments come while a part of the gaming community continues to oppose DLSS 5, and while NVIDIA is clearly committed to the technology and is expanding its use in games.
Chmielarz explained that many people have problems with generative AI because the results look poor, and that the same happens with DLSS 5 when it is set to its maximum. In that case, he said, a game looks artificial and smudgy. His advice is to use it in moderation, comparing it to adding a little salt to a soup without over salting it, and he said that the result is then simply great. He added that he does not know whether this holds for every game, but he used the saying of Paracelsus that the dose makes the poison to describe his position. In his view, DLSS 5 is harmful only when it is abused and works well when it is used correctly.
He also pointed to the history of earlier versions of the technology. DLSS 3 caused the controversy over so called fake frames, yet Frame Generation is common today, and he noted that DLSS 3 and 4 are no longer controversial because people simply use them. He expects the same to happen with DLSS 5. He recalled that he was among those who complained about the first trailer, since it looked bad to him, but that after a leak in which some people were using it properly, he saw screens that looked decent and that he preferred because of the extra detail.
NVIDIA announced last week a new preset that is up to 30 to 40 percent faster, with slightly less impressive graphics uplifts. The preset launched on Friday and has already been added to PC games through several injectors. Official support is set to grow, since NBA 2K27 will soon be joined by Hogwarts Legacy, which will be updated on November 5, while Where Winds Meet adds DLSS 5 in late November. Modders have also applied Foveated Rendering, a technique taken from virtual reality, to DLSS 5 injectors, as in FoveatedDLSS 5, which keeps full resolution at the center of the screen and reduces it at the edges to improve frame rates.
