At the National Recognition Ceremony celebrating Pakistan’s freelancing champions, Pakistan Freelancers Association (PAFLA) President Dr Imran Batada shared a message for the country’s freelancers centered on adaptability, continuous skill development, and innovation. His central message, summarized as “unlearn, relearn, innovate,” reflected his view that in a rapidly changing digital landscape, experience alone is no longer sufficient for freelancers to remain competitive, and that continuous upgrading of skills and adaptation to new technologies has become a baseline requirement rather than an optional pursuit. Batada, who has previously said Pakistan’s freelancing community stands at an estimated three million people and has personally trained more than 25,000 freelancers, used the platform to push a broader mindset shift he sees as necessary for the sector’s next phase of growth.
Batada specifically encouraged freelancers to reframe how they think about artificial intelligence, moving away from anxiety over whether AI will replace their work and instead focusing on how the technology can multiply their individual efficiency and output. This framing reflects a broader conversation happening across freelance and gig economy circles globally, where AI tools are increasingly seen as either a competitive threat or a productivity multiplier depending on how individual workers choose to integrate them into their existing workflows. Batada’s push toward the latter framing suggests PAFLA is positioning AI literacy as a core skill freelancers need to develop rather than a disruption to be feared or resisted.
Beyond AI adaptation, Batada emphasized the need for Pakistani freelancers to move beyond purely service based work by creating digital assets and scalable products capable of opening new markets, a shift that would represent a meaningful evolution for a freelancing sector that has historically been built around hourly or project based service delivery on platforms like Upwork and Fiverr. This push toward asset creation and productization echoes broader industry trends where successful freelancers increasingly build recurring revenue streams through templates, courses, software tools, or other scalable products rather than relying solely on one off client engagements. Batada framed this as necessary for taking Pakistan’s freelancing industry to a more advanced stage of development, beyond the transactional service model that has driven much of its growth to date.
As PAFLA’s president, Batada continues to advocate for what he describes as a stronger freelance ecosystem, one where freelancers share knowledge, mentor others, and build opportunities for the broader community rather than operating purely as individual economic actors. This community oriented framing aligns with PAFLA’s other recent initiatives, including its partnerships with organizations like Innovista and SI Global Solutions aimed at expanding training, mentorship, and capacity building programmes for freelancers across the country. With Pakistan’s freelance export earnings having grown significantly in recent fiscal years, Batada’s remarks at the ceremony point toward the association’s continued focus on skill development and mindset shifts as the next lever for sustaining that growth, alongside the policy advocacy work PAFLA has separately pursued with government bodies on taxation and payment infrastructure issues affecting the sector.
