Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has cleared Jazz, Zong, and Ufone to participate in the country’s upcoming 5G and Next Generation Mobile Services spectrum auction, scheduled to begin on March 10, 2026. The regulator confirmed that all three operators successfully completed the required documentation and submitted bank guarantees within the stipulated deadlines. Applications underwent comprehensive technical and financial evaluation in accordance with the Information Memorandum, with PTA issuing the final list of qualified bidders on March 3. No additional operators submitted applications following the February 27 deadline, signaling a focused competition among the established telecom providers.

To prepare participants for the bidding process, PTA has scheduled a bidders’ seminar on March 4, followed by a mock auction on March 5. These preparatory steps aim to ensure that all qualified operators understand the auction process, bidding requirements, and technical obligations. The auction will offer a total of 597.2 MHz of spectrum across six frequency bands, with mandatory bidding for the 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz bands to support the initial rollout of commercial 5G services. Additional spectrum bands available include 700 MHz to enhance coverage, 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz for network capacity strengthening, and 2300 MHz to expand data services.

The government anticipates that commercial 5G services will be launched in major cities through a phased approach starting mid-2026. Telecom operators have been preparing their networks to accommodate the higher speeds and lower latency that 5G promises, while ensuring that coverage expands efficiently across urban centers. PTA’s structured auction and preparatory sessions are designed to foster transparency, competition, and investment, ultimately benefiting consumers and businesses alike by enabling faster mobile broadband and improved connectivity for emerging digital services.

This development comes at a critical time as Pakistan seeks to enhance its digital infrastructure and expand access to advanced telecommunications services. By qualifying the three major telecom operators and establishing clear bidding and rollout frameworks, PTA aims to ensure that 5G deployment proceeds efficiently and meets both technical and commercial objectives. The auction represents a key step in advancing Pakistan’s mobile broadband ecosystem, supporting economic growth, innovation, and enhanced digital services across the country.
