Huawei has confirmed the launch of its new passport style foldable smartphone, the Huawei Pura X Max, positioning itself ahead of anticipated entries from Apple and Samsung in the emerging category of wide aspect ratio foldable devices. The company announced that the device will debut in China on April 20 alongside the Huawei Pura 90 Pro, marking its latest push in the premium smartphone segment.
The Pura X Max builds on the design language of the earlier Pura X, which introduced a wider display format compared to conventional foldables. While Huawei has yet to disclose detailed specifications of the display, the new model is expected to feature larger and wider outer and inner screens, aimed at improving usability and multitasking. The company has already revealed the design of the device, showcasing a triple rear camera system arranged in a horizontal pill shaped module, along with selfie cameras integrated into both the external and internal displays. The design reflects a continued focus on combining hardware innovation with practical form factors in foldable smartphones.
According to information available through Huawei’s official online store, the Pura X Max will be offered in multiple colour options, including Interstellar Blue, Olive Gold, Phantom Night Black, Vibrant Orange, and Zero Degree White. The smartphone is also expected to be available in several memory and storage configurations, ranging from 12GB RAM with 256GB or 512GB storage to a higher end variant featuring 16GB RAM with up to 1TB of storage. Pre orders for the device have already opened, indicating early market interest ahead of its official unveiling. Industry reports suggest that the handset may be powered by a Kirin 9030 series chipset, although the company has not formally confirmed detailed hardware specifications.
The announcement comes at a time when competition in the foldable smartphone segment is intensifying, with global manufacturers exploring new form factors to differentiate their offerings. Reports have indicated that Apple and Samsung are also working on similar wide foldable designs, though neither company has officially introduced such a device to date. Huawei’s early confirmation of the Pura X Max highlights its intent to maintain a leading position in foldable innovation, particularly in its home market of China. As manufacturers continue to experiment with design and functionality, the evolution of foldable devices is expected to remain a key area of focus within the broader smartphone industry.
