YouTube has expanded its experimental direct messaging feature to users in the United States, making it available to those aged 18 and older on the platform’s mobile application. The Google-owned video-sharing platform started testing direct messages late last year in Ireland and Poland, before expanding it to more European countries in March 2026. The US rollout builds on the positive feedback received from the countries where the feature has been live for the past few months.

This is not the first time YouTube has introduced a direct messaging feature. It launched one in 2017 and then discontinued it two years later in 2019 to encourage more public conversations in the comments section. The revival of the feature reflects a shift in how the platform views private communication, with YouTube acknowledging that direct messaging has been among its most frequently requested features from users who want a more convenient way to share videos with friends and contacts without leaving the application.

To use the feature, users tap the Messages button visible in the top right corner of the YouTube app and then tap “Invite to chat.” The invite can be sent to anyone on the platform, and recipients have the choice to accept or decline it. YouTube makes clear that users will still be able to easily send videos through other apps even while participating in the direct messaging experiment, positioning the feature as a complement to existing messaging habits rather than a replacement for them. The primary use case is straightforward: making it easier to share YouTube videos and Reels directly with friends inside the app without switching to WhatsApp, Instagram, or another messaging platform to send a link. YouTube has confirmed it will continue expanding direct messaging testing to additional countries, suggesting a broader global rollout is planned as the feature matures beyond its current experimental status.
