The World Intellectual Property Organization has announced that the 2026 edition of its Top 100 Global Innovation Cluster Ranking will be released on September 8, 2026. The annual ranking provides a detailed overview of the world’s leading innovation hubs by measuring their performance across patent filings, scientific research output and venture capital investment. The ranking has become a widely referenced benchmark for governments, businesses, investors and academic institutions seeking to understand where innovation is accelerating and which regions are shaping the future of technology driven economic growth.
The latest announcement follows the publication of the 2025 edition, which highlighted the concentration of innovation activity across North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. According to the previous rankings, China and the United States continued to dominate the global innovation landscape with eight clusters each among the world’s top thirty. Japan secured three positions, while South Korea, India and the Singapore Malaysia cluster each had strong representation. Europe remained a major innovation region with Germany contributing two clusters, while the United Kingdom, France and the Netherlands each featured one cluster in the top thirty. Israel also maintained a place among the leading global innovation ecosystems, reflecting its continued investment in technology research and entrepreneurship.
The rankings evaluate innovation clusters using a combination of patent filings, scientific publication output and venture capital investment. This approach offers a broader picture of how research institutions, universities, technology companies, startups and investors work together to create environments that support innovation. The data also illustrates how regions with strong collaboration between academia, industry and government continue to attract investment and generate intellectual property. According to the 2025 findings, the top ten innovation clusters accounted for approximately 40 percent of global Patent Cooperation Treaty filings, highlighting the concentration of research and innovation within a relatively small number of global technology hubs.
The upcoming 2026 edition is expected to provide fresh insights into how global innovation ecosystems have evolved over the past year as countries continue investing in artificial intelligence, semiconductor technologies, biotechnology, clean energy, digital infrastructure and advanced manufacturing. Policymakers, investors and technology leaders will closely monitor the new rankings to identify emerging innovation centers and assess shifts in global competitiveness. As innovation continues to play an increasingly important role in economic development, the World Intellectual Property Organization’s annual ranking remains an important reference for measuring research excellence, commercial innovation and technology driven growth across the world’s leading innovation clusters.
