WhatsApp is finally expanding voice and video calling to group chats on the web, making it easier for users to start calls directly from their browser. The update builds on the individual calling support that rolled out earlier this year in February 2026, when WhatsApp first introduced one-to-one voice and video calls on the web client. However, the February update only covered individual chats since group calling was still under development at the time. The new update now takes the next step by introducing voice and video calling to group chats on the web as well.
Select WhatsApp Web beta testers can now make group voice and video calls right from their browser, bringing the web version up to speed with the mobile and desktop apps and making it easier to connect with friends, classmates, or teammates without grabbing a phone. A limited number of users enrolled in the WhatsApp Web beta programme can now start group calls with up to 32 people and pick exactly who they want on the call, with all calls end-to-end encrypted for privacy.
Starting a group call on WhatsApp Web works the same way as in individual chats. After opening a group chat, users should look for the call button at the top of the conversation. Clicking the button allows a choice between a voice call and a video call before connecting with the group. Users can also select specific people to include in the group call rather than including all group members automatically, giving the option to call a subset of the group instead of dragging everyone in. Group calls on WhatsApp Web support up to 32 participants, matching the limit already in place on mobile and desktop, and even on WhatsApp Web, calls are secured by end-to-end encryption and include support for screen sharing during video calls.
Joining calls is also easier with the addition of call links. Users can create a special invite link, share it with others, and anyone with the link can join the call directly, removing the need to manually add participants from within the chat interface. The new WhatsApp Web update introduces dedicated phone and camera icons inside individual chats, allowing users to place voice or video calls without leaving their browser tab. The feature was first spotted in beta testing and is currently rolling out gradually, with early testers confirming that calling works smoothly within the web interface. For users who prefer working entirely in a browser, especially on devices without a strong native app environment, this is a significant upgrade that finally turns WhatsApp Web into a true desktop communication hub. The feature is currently available to select beta testers and is expected to reach a wider audience in the coming weeks as the rollout expands beyond the beta programme.
