WhatsApp is testing a new artificial intelligence powered image expansion tool that could allow users to adjust photos to different formats without removing important parts of the original image. The feature is being developed for Android and is designed to use Meta AI to generate additional content around the edges of an existing photograph. This would allow users to expand an image into a 9:16 vertical format rather than relying on conventional cropping, which can remove subjects or other details from the original frame.

The upcoming feature is reportedly being integrated into WhatsApp’s existing image editing interface. Once available, users could open a photograph in the drawing editor and select the image expansion option to adjust its framing. Meta AI would then analyze the existing image and generate additional visual content around its edges, attempting to make the expanded area appear consistent with the original photograph. The tool is expected to provide a way to adapt images for different layouts while preserving the main subject and composition. WhatsApp already allows users to make AI based changes to images through Meta AI, and the new functionality would add another editing capability directly within the messaging platform.

The 9:16 format is particularly useful for WhatsApp Status updates, which are designed around a vertical full screen layout. Photographs captured in landscape or square formats may not naturally fit this display, often requiring users to crop the image or leave unused areas around it. An expansion tool could address this problem by generating additional background or surrounding elements instead of cutting portions of the original photograph. This could be useful for users who want to share photos in a vertical format while retaining the main content of the image. The feature is reportedly still under development, meaning its final functionality and user interface could change before it becomes available.

The development is part of WhatsApp’s wider integration of Meta AI into its image and creative tools. The messaging platform has been adding artificial intelligence capabilities that allow users to create and modify visual content without switching to a separate application. Meta AI can already be used within WhatsApp to make changes to uploaded photographs and generate images from prompts. The new image expansion capability would extend those functions by focusing on aspect ratio adjustments and photo framing. WhatsApp has not yet confirmed a public release date for the tool, and it may initially be made available to a limited group of Android users for testing before a wider rollout.
