Sukkur District is preparing to roll out a multi-modal public transport upgrade that goes beyond a new train service, incorporating an electric coaster fleet and a dedicated student mobility application as part of a broader push toward technology-enabled commuting in one of Sindh’s most important urban corridors. Sukkur District Council Chairman Syed Kumail Hyder Shah announced the details following a visit to the Sukkur Railway Station to review final preparations, with operations of the Ho Jamalo train service expected to begin around Muharram, running between Rohri and Shikarpur with stops at multiple stations along the route.
The transport upgrades feature a dedicated technology integration component. Officials plan to introduce a dedicated mobile application named Phia, which will directly help students commute easily to and from their educational institutions, providing a digitally managed interface for student travel across the Sukkur-Pano Aqil corridor. The Phia application represents a meaningful step for a region where app-based transport management has not previously been a feature of public transit, and signals an intent to bring data-driven mobility tools to smaller cities beyond the major metropolitan centres of Karachi and Lahore where such solutions have traditionally been concentrated.
Alongside the train and the mobile application, authorities will simultaneously launch a low-cost electric coaster service connecting the two cities, adding a zero-emission road transport option to complement rail connectivity on the same route. The introduction of electric coasters is particularly notable from a clean energy perspective, as it extends the use of electric vehicle technology into inter-city public transport in interior Sindh, an area where electric mobility infrastructure has remained largely absent. Together, the electric coaster fleet and the Phia application represent the technology layer being built on top of traditional Pakistan Railways infrastructure, creating a more integrated and digitally accessible transport experience for commuters in the region.
The new transportation initiatives also heavily target student welfare, with students set to travel completely free of charge on the Ho Jamalo train for six months after the official launch. Pakistan Railways and the Sukkur District Council jointly developed the Ho Jamalo train service project over nearly a year, with a VIP lounge also under construction at Sukkur Railway Station to serve regular passengers and their families. The combination of free student travel, electric coasters, and a purpose-built mobility application positions this initiative as one of the more technologically considered public transport launches seen in Sindh in recent years, offering a replicable model for how district-level administrations can integrate digital tools into conventional infrastructure projects.
