The Punjab government has announced plans to introduce a Smart Rapid Transport system in Lahore, aiming to modernise urban mobility through a more efficient and technology-driven public transport solution. The project will operate along the proposed Yellow Line corridor, reflecting a broader push to upgrade transport infrastructure in the provincial capital. Authorities have directed relevant departments to expedite the process and move towards early operationalisation, signalling a focus on improving commuting options in high-traffic urban areas.

According to project details, the Smart Rapid Transport system will run along Canal Road, connecting Thokar Chowk to Harbanspura over a distance of approximately 26 kilometres. The plan includes the development of around eight stations along the route, designed to facilitate smoother passenger movement and reduce congestion on one of Lahore’s busiest corridors. Officials have indicated that the system will initially operate with six rail-based units and is expected to serve more than 12,000 passengers on a daily basis, offering an alternative to existing road-based transport systems.

The estimated cost of the project ranges between Rs 6 billion and Rs 8 billion, placing it among the more significant transport investments currently under consideration in Punjab. Authorities have already initiated the tendering process, with procurement activities underway following early planning stages. The government has set an ambitious target to make the system operational within a short timeframe, highlighting urgency in addressing Lahore’s growing transportation demands.

The introduction of the Smart Rapid Transport system aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance public transport infrastructure in Lahore, which already includes services such as metro bus and metro train systems. As urban population and traffic volumes continue to rise, projects like this are intended to provide more efficient, reliable, and structured transit options. By incorporating modern transport planning and dedicated corridors, the initiative is expected to contribute to reduced travel times and improved commuter experience, while also laying groundwork for future expansions in other parts of the province.
