Punjab Mass Transit Authority is preparing to significantly expand Rawalpindi’s electric bus network, with construction of six new bus stop sheds expected to be completed within a week, clearing the way for the launch of new routes and a substantially larger operational fleet in the garrison city. The expansion builds directly on the Punjab government’s broader provincial electric bus programme, which has already deployed 45 buses in Rawalpindi and is now targeting an increase to 80 buses within a single month to meet the growing demand for sustainable public transport across the city.
The six new bus bays under construction are being developed at locations spread across Rawalpindi’s key civic and commercial corridors. The stops are positioned in front of Fatima Jinnah Women University, the District Courts main gate, Marqa-e-Haq Monument, the Police Monument on Old Airport Road, the State Bank of Pakistan on The Mall, and Gymkhana on Rashid Minhas Road. Finishing work is still underway on drainage systems, lighting, footpaths, service roads, and the Annexe Chowk underpass near Jinnah Park, all of which are expected to be completed within the same one-week timeframe. More than 35 additional electric buses are expected to arrive in Rawalpindi alongside the infrastructure completion, bringing the fleet to a level capable of serving the expanded route network.
The new routes being prepared for launch will allow commuters to travel from Rawat T-Chowk to the District Courts and from Koral Chowk to Soan Bridge, the Motorway, Rawalpindi Railway Station, and Saddar, connecting previously underserved corridors to the electric bus network for the first time. An additional route from Saddar to Hamrahi Bus Stop will also be introduced, improving connectivity to the Soan River area and the Lahore High Court Rawalpindi Bench. The expansion of Rawalpindi’s electric bus infrastructure forms part of the wider Punjab initiative announced by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to introduce electric buses across all 148 tehsils of the province, with Rawalpindi’s urban network serving as one of the most visible and high-traffic demonstrations of that commitment in action.
