The Punjab government has decided to launch an app-based electric bike rental service in Lahore, introducing a shared mobility option designed to ease traffic congestion, reduce fuel dependency, and offer students, office workers, and daily commuters a cleaner and more affordable way to move around the city.
The project will be launched in phases, with 10,000 electric bikes to be deployed in the initial stage alongside approximately 300 docking and charging stations to be established across the city. The Punjab Housing Authority will provide land for the stations, which are intended to improve connectivity between major residential and commercial areas and nearby public transport hubs. Citizens will be able to access the service through a dedicated mobile application, making the rental process accessible without requiring physical interaction at a counter or pre-registration at a government office.
The project will be implemented in collaboration with the Lahore Parking Company, also known as LePark, the Transport Department, the Safe City Authority, and other relevant institutions, bringing together multiple provincial bodies under a single coordinated delivery structure. The multi-agency approach is intended to ensure that station placement, traffic integration, and safety monitoring are aligned from the outset rather than managed in isolation across separate departments. Officials said the initiative is expected to reduce carbon emissions by thousands of tonnes every year, directly addressing the persistent air pollution and smog conditions that have increasingly affected Lahore, particularly during winter months when emissions combine with atmospheric conditions to create severe air quality deterioration across the city.
Punjab Housing Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal said the service would help reduce traffic congestion, lower fuel costs, and cut environmental pollution, adding that the government is pursuing modern initiatives to improve environmental conditions and reduce the effects of smog across the province. The electric bike rental scheme sits alongside a broader set of green transport initiatives the Punjab government has been advancing through the 2026-27 budget cycle, including the distribution of 50,000 electric motorcycles to students and unemployed youth on an interest-free basis, the addition of 2,000 electric buses to the provincial public transport fleet, and the provision of 5,000 electric taxis for youth employment, collectively positioning Lahore and the wider province as a growing hub for electric urban mobility in Pakistan.
