Punjab is entering a new era of urban and rural sanitation with the launch of a comprehensive cleanliness initiative led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. The Clean Punjab program aims to modernize the province’s sanitation infrastructure, replacing traditional brooms with eco-friendly electric vehicles and mechanical sweepers for streets, roads, and public spaces. This marks a significant step toward leveraging technology to improve hygiene, reduce manual labor, and enhance environmental sustainability across cities and villages. Under this initiative, cleaning services will now be available every day, including Sundays, ensuring uninterrupted maintenance and better living conditions for residents.

A key feature of the initiative is the Waste-to-Value project, designed to convert waste into energy. CM Maryam has requested a detailed implementation plan for the project by mid-January, reflecting a strong commitment to sustainable urban development. Alongside technological improvements, the program introduces strict enforcement measures for public cleanliness. Littering in commercial areas or on roads will trigger legal action, with violators being processed within 15 days. The number of sanitation workers in each union council will increase, and new proposals include allocating one tractor for every two union councils to streamline waste collection and disposal. Proper enclosures for garbage bins and containers are also planned to maintain high standards of organization and cleanliness.

CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif described the scale of the project as “nothing less than a miracle,” emphasizing that a comprehensive sanitation system should have been established years ago. She highlighted that the initiative began from scratch and is now gradually improving, receiving positive responses from citizens across the province. The program also integrates transparency and efficiency through digitalization, with salaries and payments for sanitation staff fully automated. The Vehicle Tracking Management System and live container monitoring allow real-time supervision of sanitation vehicles, while waste management companies are evaluated on key performance indicators to ensure accountability and consistent service quality.

With this initiative, Punjab sets a benchmark in combining modern technology, strict enforcement, and citizen-friendly policies to create a cleaner and greener environment. By adopting digital oversight, eco-friendly equipment, and waste-to-energy projects, the province aims to improve urban and rural sanitation while fostering sustainability. The Clean Punjab initiative represents a model for other regions seeking to integrate technology and governance in public service delivery, highlighting the role of innovation in enhancing public health and quality of life.
