Pakistani authorities have announced a temporary suspension of cellular services in specific districts across Punjab and Balochistan provinces. The suspension will be in effect on April 21st and 22nd to coincide with upcoming by-elections.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) confirmed the move, stating it was directed by the Ministry of Interior. The goal, according to the PTA, is to
“Safeguard the integrity and security of the electoral process.”
This decision comes after concerns regarding potential misuse of mobile networks to disrupt the elections. The by-elections follow recent national elections marred by communication issues impacting the Electoral Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) ability to connect with polling stations.
While the PTA acknowledges the importance of communication during elections, it emphasizes this suspension is a necessary precaution
“To maintain public order and prevent any potential misuse of mobile networks.”
The suspension is part of broader security measures to ensure a fair and peaceful voting process.
Residents in the affected districts are advised to plan accordingly and utilize alternative communication methods during the suspension period. The PTA assures the public that services will be restored as soon as possible following the conclusion of the by-elections.
