The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) has instructed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and telecom operators across the country to activate emergency preparedness measures as Pakistan enters a period of heightened flood risk during the monsoon season. The ministry has directed all stakeholders to remain on high alert and implement precautionary measures to protect telecommunications infrastructure from potential damage caused by heavy rainfall, flash floods and other weather-related emergencies. Maintaining uninterrupted communication services has been identified as a top priority to support emergency response and public safety.
As part of the directive, PTA has been asked to activate its dedicated control room to monitor network conditions and coordinate emergency response efforts nationwide. The regulator will also work closely with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to ensure timely information sharing and coordinated action during any emergency situation. Telecom operators have been instructed to closely coordinate with Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) and local district administrations, particularly in flood-prone regions. They have also been asked to continuously monitor weather conditions, assess risks to network infrastructure and implement preventive measures to minimize service disruptions before severe weather impacts critical telecom facilities.
The ministry has emphasized the importance of maintaining reliable communication during natural disasters. Operators have been directed to keep technical restoration teams on standby, monitor vulnerable network sites around the clock and begin repair work immediately if telecom infrastructure is damaged by flooding or heavy rains. The advisory comes ahead of the peak monsoon period, when heavy rainfall has historically caused disruptions to telecom services in several parts of Pakistan. Authorities believe that proactive planning, rapid coordination and continuous monitoring will help minimize outages and ensure communication networks remain operational during emergencies.
The latest directive reflects the government’s broader focus on strengthening the resilience of Pakistan’s telecommunications infrastructure against climate-related challenges. By preparing networks in advance and improving coordination between regulators, operators and disaster management agencies, authorities aim to ensure citizens remain connected when communication is needed most.
