OpenAI has updated ChatGPT’s default model to GPT-5.5 Instant, following closely on the heels of its recent GPT-5.5 release, with the new model bringing meaningful improvements in factual accuracy, response quality, and personalization capabilities. OpenAI touts GPT-5.5 as producing 52.5 percent fewer hallucinated claims in internal testing, and 37.3 percent fewer inaccurate claims when taking on conversations that ChatGPT users had flagged for factual errors, addressing one of the most persistent criticisms of large language models: their tendency to generate confidently stated but incorrect information.

Beyond factual accuracy, OpenAI has also focused on refining the model’s communication style. The company says it designed the new model to generate more direct responses while keeping the warmth and personality that makes ChatGPT enjoyable to use, with GPT-5.5 Instant also better at asking fewer unnecessary followup questions and generating less cluttered outputs, in part thanks to more subdued emoji use. On the personalization front, the updated model is faster at searching uploaded files, connected Gmail accounts, and prior ChatGPT conversations to generate responses tailored to the individual user, which OpenAI says should translate to users needing to repeat context and preferences less frequently across conversations.

Alongside the model update, OpenAI is introducing a new feature called memory sources, designed to give users greater transparency over how ChatGPT is using personal context to shape its responses. The feature gives people the option to delete the information or update it if it is no longer relevant, with memory sources not shown to others if a user chooses to share a chat, and users remaining in control of what is in their memory through settings, the option to delete specific saved memories, or the use of temporary chats that do not use or update memory at all. OpenAI acknowledges that in its current form the feature will not display every piece of information ChatGPT might have drawn on to inform a given answer, but has indicated it is working to make memory sources more comprehensive over time. The improved personalization capabilities of GPT-5.5 Instant are being rolled out to Plus and Pro subscribers first, with Free, Go, Business, and Enterprise users set to receive access in the coming weeks, while the memory sources feature will be available to all ChatGPT users on both web and mobile platforms.
