OpenAI has acquired the health-focused startup Torch, reportedly paying around $100 million in equity, to bolster the capabilities of its recently launched ChatGPT Health service. While the financial details have not been fully disclosed, a source familiar with the transaction confirmed to The Information that the deal values Torch at approximately $100 million. The four-person Torch team will join OpenAI, continuing their work within the AI-driven healthcare ecosystem. The acquisition follows OpenAI’s ongoing expansion into health features, highlighting the company’s commitment to leveraging AI for personal and clinical healthcare management.

Torch, prior to its acquisition, was developing an application designed to unify an individual’s medical data from multiple sources, including doctor visits, lab results, wearable devices, and consumer wellness tests. The team described their technology as a “medical memory for AI,” aiming to create a single context engine capable of analyzing fragmented health records through artificial intelligence. This integration allows for a comprehensive and continuous view of an individual’s health, potentially improving diagnostics, monitoring, and personal health insights. Torch co-founder Ilya Abyzov noted that the team’s experience stems from their time at Forward Health, a company recognized for operating AI-powered doctors’ offices, which shut down in late 2024 after raising over $400 million in funding.

With the acquisition, Torch’s technology and team will now become part of ChatGPT Health, OpenAI’s service designed to help users analyze and manage health information. Unlike Forward Health, which ceased operations, the integration ensures that Torch’s tools continue to evolve under OpenAI’s umbrella. While OpenAI has not provided a specific timeline for new feature releases, the integration is expected to enhance ChatGPT Health’s ability to provide AI-powered insights from aggregated medical data, bridging gaps in fragmented healthcare records and supporting users in managing their health more effectively.

The deal positions OpenAI to further expand its influence in digital health, combining Torch’s expertise in medical data aggregation with ChatGPT’s AI capabilities. By integrating AI-driven health analysis, OpenAI aims to offer more personalized and accurate insights to users, while exploring new applications for AI in preventive care, chronic disease management, and wellness tracking. The acquisition underscores a growing trend of AI companies acquiring specialized health tech startups to accelerate innovation, and it signals OpenAI’s strategic focus on creating practical AI solutions that enhance everyday health management for individuals and healthcare providers alike.
