The NUST School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering recently hosted a distinguished academic delegation from Tongwon University, Republic of Korea, under the Korean-Pakistan Educational Corridor programme, marking a structured engagement between two engineering institutions at the forefront of their respective national research ecosystems. The delegation was led by Professor Dr. Jongin Choi, President of Tongwon University, who was accompanied by his team, alongside Dr. Khurram Iqbal, President of the Consortium for Asia Pacific and Eurasian Studies, and his team.
The visiting delegates were received by NUST School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering faculty, with both sides engaging in open and productive discussions on areas of mutual academic and research interest. The exchanges covered potential areas of collaboration spanning research projects, faculty exchange, student mobility, and joint programme development, with the Korean-Pakistan Educational Corridor framework providing the institutional structure within which these discussions took place. The Consortium for Asia Pacific and Eurasian Studies played a facilitating role in bringing the delegation together, reflecting its mandate to build scholarly and institutional bridges across the Asia-Pacific and Eurasian region.
A highlight of the visit was a tour of the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering’s research laboratories, which gave the Tongwon University delegation firsthand exposure to the advanced engineering capabilities and research infrastructure that NUST has developed in areas spanning manufacturing processes, materials engineering, energy systems, and applied mechanics. The laboratory tour served not only as a demonstration of NUST’s research depth but also as a practical foundation for identifying where the two institutions’ capabilities are most complementary and where collaborative projects could generate the greatest mutual benefit.
The Korean-Pakistan Educational Corridor represents a broader effort to formalise and scale academic engagement between Pakistan and South Korea, two countries with growing bilateral relations across trade, technology, and education. For NUST School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, the visit from Tongwon University adds to a growing portfolio of international academic partnerships and signals the school’s intent to position itself as a preferred partner for engineering research collaboration within South and East Asia. As both institutions work to identify follow-up activities stemming from the visit, the engagement stands as a meaningful step toward building a sustained and productive academic relationship between Pakistan and the Republic of Korea.
