The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is preparing to introduce a scheme aimed at providing electric scooters to working women and female students, as part of efforts to improve mobility and promote environmentally friendly transport solutions across the province. The initiative was discussed during a meeting of the Planning and Development Department, where proposals for the Annual Development Program 2026 to 2027 were reviewed under the leadership of Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi. The programme reflects a growing focus on inclusive transport policies that address mobility challenges faced by women while supporting the adoption of electric vehicles.

Officials involved in the planning process indicated that the scheme is designed to provide safe, affordable and accessible transport options for women, particularly those engaged in employment or pursuing education. By facilitating access to electric scooters, the initiative aims to reduce reliance on conventional transport while offering greater independence and convenience in daily commuting. The move aligns with broader efforts to encourage the use of electric mobility solutions, which are increasingly being viewed as a cost effective and sustainable alternative amid rising fuel prices and urban transport challenges.

In addition to the distribution plan, the provincial leadership has also directed authorities to explore the development of a local electric bike and scooter manufacturing industry within Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The proposal is intended to support technological advancement and local production capabilities, while creating opportunities for industrial growth and employment. Establishing a domestic manufacturing base for electric vehicles could also contribute to reducing costs and improving accessibility for consumers in the long term.

The initiative highlights the province’s commitment to integrating sustainable transport solutions into its development strategy, while addressing gender specific mobility barriers. As Pakistan continues to explore electric vehicle adoption, programmes such as this are expected to play a role in expanding awareness and usage of cleaner transport options. By combining policy support with targeted schemes, the government aims to create a more inclusive and environmentally conscious transport ecosystem that supports both social and economic development.
