The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has announced an electric vehicle (EV) charging project to be installed across the city in a major step toward promoting clean and sustainable mobility. The initiative, which begins with key routes including Shahrah-e-Faisal, Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road, and Stadium Road, aims to encourage the adoption of eco-friendly transport options while reducing carbon emissions and improving Karachi’s air quality. This development marks a milestone in the city’s transition toward greener technologies, in line with Pakistan’s broader environmental and climate goals.

With Karachi facing increasing air pollution and traffic-related emissions, city officials have been working to develop solutions that balance modernization with sustainability. The launch of EV charging infrastructure is part of this effort to reshape Karachi’s urban landscape into a cleaner and more energy-efficient environment. During a high-level meeting at KMC Head Office, Mayor Murtaza Wahab directed departments to accelerate the process of installing EV charging stations and ensure that progress remains on track. He reiterated the administration’s vision to transform Karachi into a city that prioritizes environmental well-being alongside technological growth. “This initiative reflects our vision for a greener, smarter, and more sustainable Karachi,” said Mayor Wahab, emphasizing the importance of public and private cooperation in achieving long-term climate resilience.

KMC plans to utilize its own resources and city-owned land to establish the charging stations, ensuring that the project moves forward efficiently without dependence on external funding. The project is designed not only to provide convenient charging access for electric vehicle owners but also to promote a behavioral shift among citizens toward cleaner transport options. By reducing reliance on fuel-based vehicles, the initiative aims to cut emissions and lower operational costs for commuters, making electric mobility more accessible to the general public. The initiative will also help prepare the city’s infrastructure for the anticipated rise in electric vehicle ownership across Pakistan in the coming years.

The meeting was attended by key KMC officials, including Financial Advisor Gulzar Abro, Director Media Daniyal Alishan, and Deputy Director Planning Musheer Mahar, all of whom expressed full support for the project’s swift implementation. They highlighted the potential of the initiative to enhance the city’s reputation as a forward-thinking metropolitan center. In later phases, the EV infrastructure plan will extend to more areas of Karachi, creating a comprehensive charging network that aligns with national climate strategies. Through this initiative, KMC reinforces its commitment to creating a cleaner, more sustainable, and climate-resilient Karachi equipped to meet the challenges of urban growth and environmental preservation.
