The Federal Directorate of Education has upgraded nine secondary schools across Islamabad Capital Territory to college status, introducing intermediate-level programmes with a greater focus on technical education and computer skills. The upgraded institutions will begin operating as colleges from the 2026-27 academic session and will offer a combination of technical, computer science, science and humanities programmes. The decision is intended to expand access to intermediate education while giving students additional options to study subjects connected with technology and technical skills. Several of the institutions have been renamed as Islamabad Model Colleges following their upgrade, allowing students to continue their education within the same public sector education system after completing secondary school. The move also introduces Inter Tech and Intermediate in Computer Science programmes at multiple institutions, giving students an opportunity to begin studying technical and computing subjects at the intermediate level. The Federal Directorate of Education has issued an official notification covering the institutions included in the upgrade, with the programmes varying according to the individual college. The expansion is part of changes to the public education structure in Islamabad and will provide students with additional pathways for continuing their education after secondary school.

Among the boys institutions included in the upgrade are Islamabad Model School for Boys in G-10/3, Islamabad Model School for Boys in I-14 and Islamabad Model School for Boys in Chattar. These institutions have been elevated to college status and renamed Islamabad Model Colleges, with the Inter Tech programme being introduced at each. Islamabad Model School for Boys in G-9/1 has also been upgraded and renamed Islamabad Model College for Boys G-9/1, where students will have access to both Inter Tech and Intermediate in Computer Science programmes. Islamabad Model School for Boys in Golra has been renamed Islamabad Model College for Boys Golra and will offer FSc, FA and Intermediate in Computer Science. Islamabad Model School for Boys in Tarlai has also been upgraded to college status and will offer FA and Intermediate in Computer Science. The range of programmes means students will have access to both conventional intermediate education and technology-focused courses depending on the institution they attend. The inclusion of computer science and technical programmes is particularly relevant for students interested in computing and other technology-related fields, as these courses can provide foundational academic preparation before higher education or professional training. The upgraded institutions will therefore serve a broader educational role than their previous school-level structure.

Three girls schools have also been included in the upgrade. Islamabad Model School for Girls in Sangjani has been renamed Islamabad Model College for Girls and will introduce the Inter Tech programme. Islamabad Model School for Girls in Pind Malkan has been upgraded to Islamabad Model College for Girls and will offer FA and Intermediate in Computer Science. Islamabad Model School for Girls in NHC has also been elevated to Islamabad Model College for Girls and will offer both Inter Tech and Intermediate in Computer Science. The availability of technical and computing programmes across both boys and girls institutions expands access to these subjects within the public education system. Students who previously had to seek separate colleges for intermediate education will have additional options at the upgraded institutions, depending on the programmes available at each location. The introduction of computer science programmes also provides students with an opportunity to develop foundational skills in a field that has become increasingly relevant to higher education and employment. At the same time, the colleges will continue to provide programmes in humanities and science where specified, ensuring that students are not limited to technical subjects and can choose academic pathways according to their interests and future plans.

The upgrade of these nine institutions comes as education systems increasingly incorporate computer and technical skills into secondary and intermediate education. By introducing these programmes within Islamabad public colleges, the Federal Directorate of Education is expanding the availability of technology-related subjects for students while also increasing the capacity for intermediate-level education. The new colleges will not exclusively focus on computer science or technical education, as different institutions will provide combinations of FA, FSc, Intermediate in Computer Science and Inter Tech programmes. This allows the upgraded institutions to accommodate students with different academic interests while providing greater exposure to technology-focused education. The programmes are scheduled to begin from the 2026-27 academic session, making the upcoming academic year the starting point for the new college-level structure. The decision also means students across several areas of Islamabad Capital Territory will have access to expanded public education facilities without necessarily having to move to a separate institution after completing school. The introduction of computer science and technical programmes further adds a technology-focused element to the expansion and gives students more options for developing skills that can support further education in computing and related fields.
