iOS 27: Apple’s Biggest Software Update In Years With Foldable iPhone Support And Revamped Siri

Apple is gearing up for what could be its most consequential software release in recent memory, with iOS 27 expected to preview at the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2026 before shipping publicly in September alongside a new lineup of iPhone models. The update carries expectations that extend beyond a typical annual cycle, largely because several features originally promised for iOS 26 were delayed due to development challenges, most notably the intelligence-powered upgrade to Siri that Apple had been building toward. With those features now understood to be targeting iOS 27, the upcoming release is being positioned as both a forward step and a course correction, arriving at a moment when Apple’s artificial intelligence ambitions are under close scrutiny from both consumers and the wider technology industry.

Central to the iOS 27 story is Apple’s first foldable iPhone, widely referred to as the iPhone Fold, which is expected to debut in September alongside the new software. The device is reported to feature a 5.5-inch display when closed and expand to a 7.8-inch display when unfolded, adopting a 4:3 aspect ratio similar to the iPad rather than the taller proportions favoured by most competing foldable devices. iOS 27 will introduce new layouts specifically designed to take advantage of the larger unfolded screen, giving users an experience closer to the iPad interface, with two applications running side by side and left-side sidebars integrated into many of Apple’s own applications. Importantly, the device will continue to run iOS rather than iPadOS, and will not support iPad applications, meaning Apple is building an entirely new interface layer tailored to the form factor rather than simply borrowing from an existing platform. Developers will also receive tools to help adapt their own applications to the new layout requirements.

The most expensive changes in iOS 27, however, are centred on Siri and Apple Intelligence. Apple originally planned to deliver the upgraded intelligence-powered Siri in iOS 26.4, but internal development pressures pushed that timeline back, and the full vision of what Apple has been building is now expected to arrive with iOS 27. The company has outlined three core pillars for the new Siri: personal context, onscreen awareness, and deeper application integration. Personal context will allow Siri to draw on a user’s emails, messages, files, and photographs to complete tasks more intelligently, for instance locating a file a specific contact shared, retrieving a stored document reference, or finding a conversation thread about a particular topic. Onscreen awareness will allow Siri to recognise what is currently visible on the display and act on it directly, whether that means saving an address from a message to a contact card or sending a photograph that is currently open. Deeper application integration will extend Siri’s capabilities to moving files between applications, editing and sending media, setting navigation and sharing arrival times, and even sending drafted emails, capabilities that go considerably further than what Siri can do today. Apple is also building a chatbot-style version of Siri that will function more like modern artificial intelligence assistants, and is working with Google’s Gemini team on a custom model to power parts of that functionality. A World Knowledge search tool is also planned, allowing Siri to pull information from the web and deliver summarised answers in plain language, an experience described as similar to ChatGPT but deeply embedded within the operating system. Apple may also refresh Siri’s visual design as part of the update, with hints of a more animated interface emerging from hints tied to other Apple hardware projects.

Beyond artificial intelligence, iOS 27 is also expected to deliver meaningful under-the-hood improvements. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has described the release using the term “Snow Leopard-style,” a reference to the 2009 version of macOS that prioritised performance and stability over visible new features, and Apple is said to be cleaning up legacy code and rewriting certain components for greater efficiency, with the potential benefit of improved battery life for users. Apple is also planning to replace its Core Machine Learning framework with a new Core Artificial Intelligence framework, giving third-party developers more accessible tools to integrate artificial intelligence models into their own applications. Additional satellite connectivity features are in development for potential arrival in 2026 or 2027, depending on readiness from satellite partner Globalstar, with capabilities including satellite-based Apple Maps, photo sharing via satellite, a satellite application programming interface for third-party developers, and eventually satellite connectivity that does not require a direct line of sight to the sky. Apple will formally reveal iOS 27 at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2026, with the public release to follow in September.
