Huawei continues to experiment with new form factors in personal computing, and the Huawei MateBook Fold Ultimate Edition reflects that ambition. The device, which blends characteristics of a laptop and a tablet through a foldable design, recently attracted attention at Huawei Connect 2025 in China. While foldable phones have been steadily entering the market over the past few years, Huawei is exploring how the same concept can extend into productivity devices. The MateBook Fold Ultimate Edition stands out not only because of its design but also because of its portability and hardware specifications, though availability remains limited to mainland China.

Interest in the device has grown partly due to its unconventional approach to portable computing. While often referred to as a foldable laptop, the MateBook Fold Ultimate Edition functions more like a foldable tablet that can transform into a laptop when needed. The device weighs only 1.16 kilograms, which makes it about 80 grams lighter than the 2025 MacBook Air. When folded for transport, the device measures 14.9 millimeters in thickness. Once unfolded, the two halves measure 7.6 millimeters on the left side and 7.3 millimeters on the right side. That places it slightly thicker than the latest iPad Pro and iPad Air models, though still within the range expected from premium portable devices. The lightweight design is particularly appealing for professionals who travel frequently and want to reduce the number of devices they carry.

The MateBook Fold Ultimate Edition also offers high end specifications. It comes equipped with 32GB of RAM and offers storage options of either 1TB or 2TB SSD. Connectivity includes Bluetooth 5.2, dual band WiFi support, and two USB C ports. The centerpiece of the device is its flexible double layer OLED touchscreen display. When fully unfolded, the display measures 18 inches and offers a resolution of 3296 by 2472. In laptop mode, when the screen is folded and the lower half becomes a virtual keyboard area, the display measures 13 inches with a resolution of 2472 by 1648. This flexible configuration allows users to switch between a tablet experience and a more traditional laptop setup depending on the task.

Battery performance is another area where the device aims to compete with established laptops. The MateBook Fold Ultimate Edition includes a 74.96Wh battery. That capacity is larger than the battery found in the 14 inch MacBook Pro and significantly higher than the batteries in the 13 inch iPad Pro and iPad Air. Combined with its lightweight build, the device is positioned as a practical option for travel and mobile work environments. The device also supports a software keyboard that appears on the lower half of the display when the screen is folded into laptop mode. During hands on testing, the virtual keyboard performed smoothly and kept up with normal typing speeds. Huawei also includes a detachable Bluetooth keyboard with the device for users who prefer a more traditional typing experience, though some users may choose to rely on the integrated keyboard to maintain the device’s minimal weight.

Beyond productivity, the large foldable screen also offers benefits for video calls, media consumption, and multitasking. When unfolded completely, the device becomes a large tablet that can provide more screen real estate than most portable devices. However, despite the strong design and impressive hardware, availability remains a key limitation. Huawei currently sells the MateBook Fold Ultimate Edition only in mainland China. While international buyers can find listings through online marketplaces such as AliExpress, purchasing hardware this way is not always practical for enterprise procurement or long term support.

If Huawei decides to introduce the MateBook Fold Ultimate Edition to broader markets such as Europe or other international regions, the device could attract attention from professionals seeking a lightweight hybrid device that merges the roles of tablet and laptop into a single system. For now, however, the product remains an interesting example of how manufacturers are experimenting with foldable technology beyond smartphones.
