Google appears to be bringing back a notification feature for Now Playing on Pixel smartphones after removing it earlier this year. The feature automatically identifies music playing in the background and previously provided a subtle notification showing the detected track. According to reports from Pixel users, those notifications have started appearing again, suggesting that Google is quietly restoring the functionality following its removal. The return comes as Now Playing has increasingly become a dedicated part of the Pixel experience, with the feature now available through a standalone app and a Quick Settings tile.
Now Playing is designed to identify songs playing around a Pixel user and keep a record of the music detected by the phone. This allows users to check their listening history later when they want to find a song they heard but did not identify at the time. Google had removed the notification component earlier this year while continuing to develop Now Playing as a dedicated application. The change meant that users could still access their identified songs through the app, but they no longer received the convenient notification that immediately displayed the name of music detected in the background.
The restored notifications do not appear to have reached every Pixel device yet. Users on Reddit have reported seeing the feature return, with screenshots providing evidence that Now Playing is once again sending track notifications. However, other Pixel owners continue to report that the notifications remain unavailable on their devices. This suggests that Google may be rolling out the change gradually rather than enabling it for all supported phones at once. The company has not indicated that the restoration is part of a major public announcement, making the return appear to be a quiet software-side change.
Now Playing remains one of the more distinctive features available on Google Pixel smartphones because music identification takes place automatically without requiring users to manually launch a separate recognition service. Google’s own Now Playing application is currently available for Pixel 6 and newer phones with the March 2026 Pixel Drop update or later, according to its Google Play listing. The app allows users to see music discovered by their device and access their listening history. With the notification functionality now returning for some users, Google appears to be restoring an element that made the feature more convenient in everyday use.
The development comes alongside a smaller firmware update being reported for the Pixel 11 series. The 96MB update, labelled CD1A.260905.001.B1, is separate from the September Pixel Drop and is described as addressing critical bugs while improving device performance and stability. The update and the return of Now Playing notifications show Google continuing to make smaller software adjustments across its Pixel lineup as it responds to user feedback and addresses issues following recent device and software releases.
