Google has announced a significant software update for the Google TV platform, bringing together short-form video integration, generative artificial intelligence tools, and tighter Gemini connectivity in a package that reflects how much the living room screen is evolving beyond conventional long-form streaming content.

The most notable addition is a YouTube Shorts integration that will display a personalised row of short-form vertical videos directly on the Google TV home page, continuing the trend of the short-form vertical video format moving off phones and onto bigger screens. Disney+ recently introduced its own vertical video platform, and Google has left the door open to integrating additional platforms in future, with the announcement specifying that this feature is starting with YouTube Shorts, suggesting TikTok and Instagram Reels could potentially follow. The YouTube Shorts row is not yet live and is expected to arrive on Google TV devices during summer 2026.

The update also brings two generative artificial intelligence tools to the platform. The AI image generator Nano Banana is now available on Google TV, allowing users to add humorous twists to any photo directly on their television screen. Separately, Google’s video generation tool Veo has been brought to the platform, enabling users to create videos from text prompts, with Google citing an example of a user asking for a video of their grandfather dancing in space. The arrival of both tools on a television platform is a notable step in Google’s effort to bring its generative artificial intelligence portfolio beyond mobile and desktop devices into the shared living room environment. Google Gemini has also been integrated into the Photos app on Google TV, enabling prompt-based queries within the application, and the app has additionally received the artificial intelligence editing suite Google Photos Remix. Most of the new features are available immediately on Gemini-enabled Google TV devices, with the YouTube Shorts home page integration the sole element still set for a later rollout.
