Google Brings Native End-To-End Encryption To Gmail On Android And iOS For The First Time

Google has extended end-to-end encryption for Gmail to Android and iOS devices, marking the first time the company has enabled native encrypted email on mobile without requiring users to rely on external tools or third-party applications. The update brings Gmail’s client-side encryption capability, which was previously limited to the desktop experience, directly into the smartphone app, making secure email communication significantly more accessible for enterprise users who depend on mobile devices as a primary means of managing their communications.

The implementation has been designed with cross-platform compatibility in mind, ensuring that encrypted messages function smoothly regardless of which email service the recipient uses. If the recipient is also on Gmail, the encrypted message arrives and displays as a standard email thread with no additional steps required. If the recipient is using a different email provider, they can still access the protected message through a secure browser interface without needing to install any additional software, a design choice that reduces friction and makes the feature practically usable in professional environments where not all correspondents are on the same platform. The encryption process itself has been kept straightforward for the sender, who simply taps a lock icon in the compose window and selects the additional encryption option before writing the email, after which the message remains protected throughout transmission.

The rollout has been pushed to both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, though access is currently restricted to users on the Google Workspace Enterprise Plus plan who also hold either the Assured Controls or Assured Controls Plus add-on. These tiers are primarily targeted at enterprise and public sector organisations with advanced compliance, data sovereignty, and regulatory requirements. Before the feature can be used on mobile devices, administrators must first enable mobile access through the client-side encryption settings within the Admin Console. For organisations operating in sectors where the confidentiality of email communications is a legal or regulatory requirement, the extension of this capability to the mobile environment represents a meaningful operational improvement, removing the previous requirement to return to a desktop to send or read encrypted messages and allowing secure email workflows to continue uninterrupted regardless of where a user is working from.
