Google is gearing up to support Pakistan’s upcoming general elections on February 8 by providing users with credible information through its various products. In a press release, the tech giant emphasized its commitment to collaborating with the government, industry, and civil society to connect voters with reliable information while safeguarding its platforms from misuse.

The search engine, a primary source of information for many users, will be tailored to amplify authoritative information on various election-related topics. Google’s homepage will feature links guiding voters on ‘how to vote’ and ‘how to register to vote,’ ensuring users have access to essential information to participate in the electoral process.

On YouTube, Google assured users that its recommendation system will prominently showcase content and context from authoritative sources, including local and national news outlets. This approach aims to facilitate access to high-quality election news and provide users with a well-rounded view of the electoral landscape.

Furthermore, Google Trends, a tool highlighting search trends, will play a crucial role in aiding the media and the public in exploring voter concerns. By showcasing top queries, topics, and party-related interests, it provides valuable insights into the public sentiment and the issues that matter most during the elections.

Under its ‘News Initiative,’ Google has conducted workshops to equip journalists with resources for informed news coverage. Journalists have been trained on news verification, digital security, and utilizing Google Trends effectively. This initiative supports the media in delivering accurate and reliable information to the public.

Farhan Qureshi, Google’s Country Director for Pakistan, emphasized the company’s focus on connecting Pakistanis to relevant election-related information online. Qureshi also highlighted their investment in the news ecosystem, including training journalists to report credible news. Recently, Google launched a Google Trends Pakistan General Election page to assist the media in accessing data for their stories.

Addressing concerns about content violations on YouTube, Google revealed that it removed over 8.1 million videos and 10 million channels globally between July and September 2023. The company employs a combination of machine learning and human reviewers to identify and eliminate policy-violating content promptly.

Qureshi stressed YouTube’s commitment to maintaining election integrity, ensuring that violative content is removed promptly while fostering a diversity of viewpoints on the platform. The goal is to protect the community from harm while providing a platform for a variety of perspectives during the election period.
