Fallout 76 is set to receive a native next generation update for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, bringing improved performance and visual quality to the long running multiplayer role playing game. Bethesda Game Studios has been working on the update to provide console players with a version that makes greater use of the hardware capabilities of current generation systems. The update will be available to existing Fallout 76 owners, with console testing taking place before the wider release.
The native versions are being developed with several technical improvements aimed at providing a smoother experience across supported consoles. Fallout 76 is expected to target 60 frames per second on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro and Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. The update will also introduce improved draw distances and enhanced shadows, allowing players to see greater visual detail across the game’s open world. PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro and Xbox Series X will support 4K resolution on compatible displays, while Xbox Series S will not receive 4K support. Variable Refresh Rate support will also be available on the current generation consoles, while PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro will support a 1440p resolution option.
The update has been in development for some time, with Bethesda previously confirming plans to bring native versions of Fallout 76 to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. The company has also been preparing console testing that will allow existing players to try the updated versions before the public rollout. Players who already own Fallout 76 will be able to access the test versions through the relevant PlayStation and Xbox stores when testing begins. Bethesda has said that development is continuing and that the rollout will follow relatively quickly once the testing phase is ready. The company has not provided a specific release date yet, meaning players will have to wait for further details about the final launch.
Fallout 76 originally launched in 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC and has continued receiving updates and additional content over the years. The native current generation release is expected to give console players improved visual performance while retaining the existing Fallout 76 experience. The update will also provide a more consistent technical experience on newer hardware, particularly through the higher frame rate target, improved visuals and Variable Refresh Rate support. Bethesda’s continued development of the current generation versions shows its ongoing support for Fallout 76, with the game remaining part of the studio’s active multiplayer lineup as it prepares the updated versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
