A Pakistani scientist has brought pride to the nation by earning one of the world’s most prestigious recognitions in science outreach. Dr. Maheera Abdul Ghani has been named the winner of the 2025 Nature Inspiring Women in Science Award in the Science Outreach category, celebrating her contributions to advancing women’s participation and leadership in science and technology.

Dr. Ghani, co-founder of WinSci Pakistan, received a $50,000 cash prize at a ceremony organized by Nature in collaboration with Springer Nature and Estée Lauder Companies Inc. The award recognizes outstanding individuals and organizations that promote women’s engagement and visibility in scientific research and education. Her selection highlights her efforts to make science accessible and inclusive for women across Pakistan and beyond, reflecting a broader movement to address gender imbalance in STEM disciplines.

WinSci Pakistan, the initiative co-founded by Dr. Ghani five years ago, is dedicated to mentoring and connecting women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Through workshops, mentoring sessions, and outreach programs, WinSci has built a growing network of women scientists, students, and educators who collaborate to create opportunities for professional growth. The platform focuses on bridging the gap between academic training and practical scientific engagement, especially for women in underrepresented regions. Dr. Ghani’s leadership has been instrumental in positioning the initiative as one of Pakistan’s leading grassroots science outreach efforts.

The recognition from Nature and its global partners marks a milestone for Pakistan’s scientific community, emphasizing the increasing impact of local initiatives on international platforms. Dr. Ghani’s work resonates with a growing global focus on diversity in science and the importance of community-driven education models. Her award reinforces the message that scientific innovation thrives when diverse perspectives are included and supported. The acknowledgment of her work by global institutions also highlights the potential of Pakistani researchers and educators in shaping the future of science communication and outreach.

Officials and colleagues from Pakistan’s academic and research circles have commended Dr. Ghani’s achievement as a source of inspiration for young scientists, particularly women aspiring to enter STEM fields. Her recognition serves as a reminder of the progress being made in science education reform and gender inclusion, showing how local dedication can lead to global acknowledgment. Through her continued efforts, Dr. Ghani aims to expand WinSci’s outreach and strengthen networks that encourage young women to pursue scientific careers, contributing to a more balanced and innovative scientific landscape in Pakistan.
